Ernst-Christian Steinecke (born in Göttingen 1984) studied Philosophy, History and Classical Studies at the University of Freiburg (Germany). In his philosophical master thesis (see publications) he investigated the semantic aspects of kinesics as well as of artefacts or aesthetic objects from a historical-anthropological standpoint. From September to December 2009 he was a member of the NCCR Iconic Criticism »eikones« in Basel and thereby began working on his doctoral thesis in which he seeks to combine methods from discourse analysis, science studies and the history of media to give a somewhat historical-epistemological account of the development of historical knowledge during the second half of the 18th century. Within the scope of this project it will be highly important to identify the impact that libraries, museums, coin cabinets, but also writing utensils, inscription devices or communication media had on research activities, methods, professional careers and institutional frameworks (see projects). Since January 2010 he is assistant at the Chair for Science Studies of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. In addition to that he takes part in the Postgraduate Program of the »Zentrum Geschichte des Wissens« (Centre for the History of Knowledge) since 2011. Besides the medial respectively material history of scientific practices the history of the university and of disciplines, especially the history of historical and classical scholarship, as well as farther-reaching issues of historical anthropology and cultural history count among his fields of attention.
