The User: Psychology, Machines, Design, 1930-1980

The project "The User" concerns a genealogy of that category – user – as a model of late modern thinking and doing: a history of the ways cognition and perception in the 20th century was shaped, enhanced and mediated: by machines; in sites such as factories, office-spaces and zones of war; and by disciplines such as ergonomics, human factors engineering, and industrial design.

In telling this story, "The User" is concerned with a genealogy of the information-processing mind (from below, as it were). It approaches the succession of 20th century psychologies as so many manifestations of (post)industrial society: from the sensory machines of interwar Psycho-technik to the human "servos" and "monitors" that were exposed by mid-century automation, to – in the era of personal computing - the situated, distributed and embodied mind still that is with us today.

Max, together with Michael Hagner, also co-directs the research project externe SeiteAugenarbeit – Visual Performance and Visual Design at eikones, NCCR Bildkritik, University of Basel.
